Course Overview

With an increasing demand for Early Childhood Educators across Victoria, the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is a stepping stone into the industry. No previous experience is required for this course, meaning it is ideal for individuals who are passionate about child development, and have a desire to make a difference in a child's life.

This course teaches key skills for working with young children, including how to:

  • Support children's play, learning, behaviour, and development.
  • Provide for young children's wellbeing.
  • Work effectively, legally, and ethically.

Prospective students must pride themselves on being empathetic, patient, and accountable, with the ability to problem-solve and engage with adults. They may work independently or under the guidance of others, though in some contexts that guidance may not be on-site.
Early childhood educators work in long daycare centres, family daycare, pre-schools, or kindergartens.

This course can be delivered as part of GOTAFE’s VET Delivered to School Students (VDSS) program. Students interested in undertaking this course need to enrol through their school.

This course is currently available as part of the Free TAFE scheme but is subject to eligibility requirements and may change in the future.

Attendance & commitment

General public face-to-face delivery | 1-year course length | Full-time study load

Students are expected to:

  • Attend on campus 3 days (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) per week (6.5 hours per day).
  • Spend approximately 10-12 hours per week working through their course materials, research, revision, and completion of assessments.
  • Attend a minimum of 80% of scheduled classes.
  • Complete 222 hours of placement, as outlined in the placement details below.

Traineeship blended delivery | 2 years course length | Full-time study load

Students are expected to:

  • Attend a 1-hour weekly webinar class, times agreed with the trainer.
  • Spend approximately 8 hours per week working through their course materials, research, revision, and completion of assessments.
  • Meet with their trainer at their place of work at least 4 times per year.
  • Consolidate their learning in their workplace.

School-Based Apprenticeship blended delivery | 2 years course length | Part-time study load

Students are expected to:

  • Attend a 1-hour weekly webinar class.
  • Spend approximately 8 hours per week working through their course materials, research, revision, and completion of assessments.
  • Meet with their trainer at their place of work at least four times per year.
  • Work within the Industry for a minimum of 7 hours per week, to consolidate learning in the workplace.
  • NOTE: This is a partial completion and students then have the opportunity to return after they have completed school and undertake further study to complete remaining 8 units to obtain the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

Workplace blended delivery | 1-year course length | Part-time study load

Students are expected to:

  • Attend a 1-hour weekly Zoom class, times agreed upon with the trainer and employer.
  • Spend approximately 19 hours per week working through their course materials, research, revision, and completion of assessments.
  • Meet with their trainer at their place of work at least 4 times per year.
  • Be employed in a regulated Early Childhood Education and Care service for a minimum of 2 days per week for the duration of their enrolment.
  • Complete their placement requirements in their workplace (this is included in normal employment hours).

Placement

  • Placement is organised by GOTAFE and students may need to travel (up to approximately 50km away) throughout Victoria (at their own cost).
  • Placement occurs in two blocks, totaling 222 hours (6 weeks).
    • Block 1: 2 weeks/38 hours per week.
    • Block 2: 3 x 38 hours per week plus 1 week 32 hours (6 weeks of placement in total) in a regulated Early Childhood and Care Service.
  • Hours will vary and may range between 6am-6.30pm, depending on the service requirements.
  • GOTAFE uniform is required to be worn during placement.
  • 100% attendance is required for placement.
  • During their placement students are required to be 18 years of age and undertake the role of an Early Childhood Educator and their skills and knowledge will be assessed by a GOTAFE trainer.

Entry requirements

Before being accepted into the course applicants:

  • Complete a Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) - an online test to ensure the required literacy & numeracy levels for the course are met.
  • Undertake a Pre-training review interview to ensure the course suits their needs and aspirations, and that they are likely to complete the course successfully.
  • Students will be required to hold a valid Working With Children Check (Volunteer).
  • Students will be required to provide a Police Check with no disclosable outcomes (within 6 months).
  • A GOTAFE polo shirt is required to be worn during placement (available for purchase at the induction).
  • Prospective Traineeship or Apprenticeship students are required to apply through an Apprenticeship Network Provider with their employer to organise their apprenticeship contract before applying for this course.
  • Prospective VDSS students are required to apply through their School's VET Coordinator or Careers Advisor.
  • Workplace students will be required to provide their employers ABN as part of the enrolment process.

Inherent requirements

Students must have the following skills when working with children:

  • Empathy, patience, and accountability when dealing with babies and children.
  • The ability to problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to effectively engage with adults.

Physical requirements in this industry include the ability to:

  • Bend down and engage with children at their level.
  • Lift and hold children, often in a repetitive nature.
  • Lift and move child-size furniture and equipment.
  • Role model and engage children in physical activities to promote healthy lifestyle choices.

General public students only - Students need to be aware that some workplaces prefer students to be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of employment in the industry to help meet educator-to-child ratios. This is a legal requirement in family daycare settings. Students are advised to consider their age when applying for the course.

Skills recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.

Course Fees consist of three different components:

  1. Student Tuition Fee - covers the costs of training and assessment. These fees vary across courses and are calculated based on a rate per nominal hour enrolled in. The student tuition fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Circumstances may include:
    1. an individual’s eligibility for Victorian (Skills First) and Commonwealth government-funded training
    2. an individual’s eligibility for concession rates on Victorian (Skills First) and Commonwealth government-funded training
    3. ineligible individuals who are required to pay the full fees for tuition and other costs.
  2. Material Fee - where applicable, cover the costs of classroom consumables, handouts and booklets, e-Learning resources and associated license access fees and excursions.
  3. Student Services Fee (SSF) – contributes to the provision of student engagement, learning and support services. SSF is a non-refundable annual fee that does not apply to short-course participants.

Additionally, some courses require students to purchase or supply textbooks, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Some specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Bookshop.
